Canelobre Caves (A-7, Salida 67,Busot) – located a half hour (26 km) north of Alicante city, these caves, located in the small picturesque town of Busot, have been compared to the typical interior of Gothic cathedrals. The acoustics here are good enough to hold concerts (which have occurred on occasion). Interestingly, these caves were busy during the Spanish Civil War (when it provided refuge for the Republican soldiers, as well as being used as an aircraft Factory and powder keg). Eco-tourists and hikers can walk from here to the 1,205 meter-high Cabezón de Oro mountain. Canelobre is said to be Spain’s largest and deepest cave system.

Bonfires of Saint John (Hogueras de San Juan)(Alicante) – this event dates back to pre-Christian times and marks the arrival of the Summer solstice, the longest day of the year. It is celebrated all over Spain but especially in coastal regions where many people head for the beach, build bonfires and party throughout the night.
The region of Alicante is one of the biggest celebrations of San Juan –taking place there from 20th to 29th June. In the city of Alicante, there are large wooden and papier maché figures (similar to “Las Fallas” in Valencia) which are displayed in the city’s main squares and are burnt down on the night of San Juan (24th). The burning begins at midnight once a palm tree shaped firework display has been released from Alicante Castle.

This is a charming area worthy of a stroll through its narrow streets. This is a worthy place to visit during holidays like Semana Santa (Easter week), since religious parades often go through here.

Z Klub (Calle de Coloma, Alacant, Alicante) — one of Alicante’s best known nightclubs, this is one serious discoteca, attracting an international crowd as well as some of the world’s best DJs spinning house, trance and techno til the wee hours. Z Club doesn’t get going until about 3am so you’ll want to try a few pre-club bars first, to avoid looking out of place by yourself.
